2023 Summer Race Team

Who is the Summer Race Team?

  • High School athletes
  • Both experienced and new rowers
  • Competitive team that races other clubs in the region
  • Athletes that want to perform at a high level in practice and in races
  • Gain racing and rowing experience in a competitive environment

Program Goals & Expectations

  1. Create a fun and competitive environment for athletes
  2. Dedicate time to practice 5 days a week
  3. Train and compete in both sweep and sculling boats
  4. Commit to racing in 4 regattas

Schedule: June 20-August 14

  • Practice times
    • Tuesday-Friday 4:00-6:30 pm
    • Saturday 11:00 am-1:30 pm
    • Drop off starts 15 minutes before practice begins, and pick up before 15 minutes after practice ends
  • Regattas
    • Independence Day Regatta – Philadelphia, PA June 30-July 1
    • Philadelphia Youth Regatta – Philadelphia, PA July 22
    • Overpeck Summer Sprints – Leonia, NJ July 29
    • Royal Canadian Henley – St. Catherines, ON Canada August 8-13 (Only select athletes will be chosen for this regatta, make sure to have a valid passport. Youth must arrive and be ready to practice on Monday, August 7th.)
    • Coaches must be notified if an athlete is unable to attend a scheduled event. Regatta weekends are demanding, and athletes are expected to help with trailer loading and unloading as well as derigging and rerigging the boats.
Joe Sullivan
Joe SullivanHead Coach
Joe has been involved in rowing for over 35 years and has been coaching since 1984. Some of his highlights as a coach include 3 medaling boats at SR AA Championships; coaching 13 crews to qualify for Youth Nationals Championships; and coaching over 14 athletes who made a Junior National Team. Joe’s years of experience have helped many high school rowers be recruited to many colleges and universities.
Art Post
Art PostBoys Head Coach
Coach Art has been involved in rowing since the 1960’s, he brings decades of experience to any crew that he coaches. Art started rowing in high school at Groton School, he continued in college at Dartmouth, and post-college he competed at an elite level for nearly 10 years. Since becoming a coach Art has coached every level of athlete, from high school novices to National Team crews. Many of his crews and athletes have found great success, including over 20 National Championship crews, and over 40 of his athletes have gone on to row for Division 1 Varsity programs.
Margie Culbertson
Margie CulbertsonAssistant Coach
Coach Margie has been a member of Whitemarsh Boat Club since 2008 and competed as a masters rower for several years. She became a youth rowing coach in 2021 with the WBC Tech Team. She is also a coach and volunteer for We Can Row Philadelphia (a rowing program for breast cancer survivors) which operates out of Whitemarsh. In 2023 she became a coach with the Youth Race Team working mostly with the novice and U16 girls.

Margie learned to row at Seattle Parks and Rec in 1993. She went on to row competitively with several clubs in the Seattle area including Green Lake, Lake Union, Lake Washington, and Seattle Pacific University before moving back to the Philadelphia area in 2006

Program Information

Before competing with Whitemarsh an athlete must

  1. Be up-date on USRowing Waiver
  2. Complete your SafeSport certification (18 years old and up)
  3. USRowing basic membership + regatta package (total cost $40)
